“Why Are They Smiling?”

In the copper dusk beneath the Second Silence, the Choir of Teeth was resurrected—not by engineers, not by priests, but by the laugh of a child who never existed.

Their bodies were built from regrets baked into armor: fossilized screams, melted coins, the husks of mechanical prayers. Their mouths—if you can call them that—never open, yet they are always grinning. Smiling, yes, but not kindly. Their smiles are scaffolds for something vast trying to come through.

No one remembers what the Choir sang before the war between architecture and blood. But when the air gets thin and reality folds inward like rusted origami, their hum begins again, deep and circular. It does not stop.

That central orb? It’s not an eye. It’s not a heart. It’s a recording device designed to store shame, layered over centuries, rewinding only when someone asks the forbidden question:

“Why are they smiling?”

That question is a key. Not to a door, but to a collapse. A personal one.

You are not supposed to ask.
You already did.
Now they remember you.

So, this painting—this reliquary of rust and stare—isn’t hanging.
It’s watching.
Waiting for you to smile back.
