“The First Machine to Remember the Sky”

They called it Omphalos, though not aloud—tongues rot quickly in air this dry.

It grew from beneath the bone-dust of the Forgotten Expanse, sprouting like a bronze weed. No one built it. No one programmed it. It simply emerged, like a guilty memory.

Omphalos was not designed for war, yet it bristled with war-shaped intentions. Its ribbed trunk pulsed with prehistoric rhythm, and its grasping limbs curved like accusations. The rusted horns atop its crown were tuned to old gods, but the signal never comes. Or maybe it does, but only in frequencies that liquefy thought.

The spires in the distance were once cities. Or egg sacs. Or defensive prayers petrified mid-chant. It doesn’t matter anymore. The Machine walks the wasteland, not seeking, not consuming—just remembering. Not information, but emotion: the ache of sunless days, the way screams echo off metal when there’s no one left to hear them.

A glyph near its base glows intermittently. Scholars once claimed it was a warning. The last scholar was eaten by his own shadow after reading it aloud.

This painting was made on the inside of the Machine’s dream, using ash and regret as medium. It is not meant to be understood. It is meant to wait.

Like Omphalos.
Like you.
Like the sky that forgot us all.
