Tall Dark Whimsey

Acrylic on canvas 21×21

It began with the sky humming in B-flat minor, a note none of the Witnesses had heard since the Milk of Proto-Logic was spilled across the Celestial Vestibule.

On the eve of the Third Unraveling, the three figures emerged from the Bruised Horizon:

  • Rendell, the red one, carried regret in both eyes and an index of extinct textures under his robe.
  • Mother Echo, centermost and least sentimental, bore six forward-facing eyes and a womb-shaped keyhole in her chest, from which the winds of forgotten dialects would sometimes scream.
  • And Lur, the green twin, danced in the syntax of unreadable verbs, each motion a clause in a treaty with matter itself.

They had returned to oversee the final shedding of the Epoch’s skin.

The ocean behind them, thick as syrup and tiled like old linoleum, began to rise in pixelated surges. Every wave carried syllables. Every syllable announced the names of unborn galaxies.

One by one, the citizens turned inside out—not painfully, just definitively—revealing their innermost selves to be elaborate scaffolds of mineral thought and desire. Mother Echo recorded none of this. She simply waited, until each being had become a word.

And then she spoke them all—simultaneously—into the next dimension.

This painting is not a record. It is residue. The afterglow of a molting long since molted. A souvenir from the moment language broke the mirror and climbed inside.
