“The Key That Stood Still”

In the middle of the rust-colored forgetting, where direction melts and horizon is held up by unresolved guilt, stands the Lockfather.

It arrived on the 77th dusk of the Year of No Shadows, dropped vertically from a crack in the yawn of a sleeping satellite. The Lockfather did not walk. It grew downward—gears first, then regrets, then limbs long ago repurposed into instructions no one followed.

On its chest was a staircase. Not for climbing. For remembering.

Each rung bore a rumor: the blue sigh of a demolished orphanage, the whispered apology of a planet that failed its moons, the secret name of rust.

The two tribes on either side—the Evenly Divided and the Once-Multiplying—gathered each solstice to ask the Lockfather a single question:
“Which direction is forward?”

It never answered. It simply radiated stillness, dividing the desert not by territory, but by dream-frequency.

They say one day it will unlock something—not a door, but an hour that hasn’t happened yet.
Until then, it rusts in perfect symmetry, a monument to indecision carved by inevitability’s idiot nephew.

We painted it because it keeps appearing in the mirror behind our thoughts.
