“The Furnace That Dreamed of Ladders”

Once, in a time before clocks dared to tick, there stood a city built entirely from the schematics of forgotten thoughts. At its center lived the Furnace-That-Dreamed, an architect of unknowable ambition. It was not built, but instead congealed—from rusted hieroglyphs, misplaced spoons, and the echo of a sigh uttered by a lonely escalator.

Each compartment in its body was an attempt at memory: a circle for every betrayal, a pipe for every apology reheated too many times, a ladder to nowhere in particular. It cooked nothing but potential. It belched sideways logic and sometimes sang—though only in equations.

One morning, or possibly a Tuesday, the Furnace decided it wanted to ascend. So it grew a ladder from its own ribs, pointed it skyward, and sent a small copper salamander to climb. The salamander made it halfway before realizing there was no top. It wept, but the tears came out as rivets.

This painting captures the precise moment when the Furnace almost understood itself—just before the idea evaporated into a cloud of clockless vapor, sweetly perfumed with rust and vanilla ambiguity.
