“The Vessel of Almost-Remembers”
They were explorers once, before they inverted.
Now they sit, entombed in the Rust Witness—a sentient bathysphere carved from oxidized intentions and dream-metal. It floats not in water, but in an idea of pressure, in a sea of thickened memory that sloshes between the green of childhood and the copper of guilt.
There are four windows, but none look out. They gaze inward. Each face trapped behind the glass is watching a different version of the same failure—one never left the garden, one never invented language, one became a god by accident, and one… simply stared too long into an unplugged socket.
The machine drifts endlessly across the edge of the thought you were about to have. When it passes, you pause, puzzled, then forget what you were doing.
This painting was done not by me, but by the Rust Witness itself—scraping pigment from its hull and etching memory in layers, begging to be misunderstood correctly.
