“The Boy Who Swallowed the Mechanism”
In the year when time turned sideways and bled through the hinges of the sun, a boy named Arlo was born with a gear lodged in his throat and a socket where his heart should’ve been. His mother wept blue coolant and whispered lullabies in binary. His father, a ghost technician, soldered lullabies into his spine.
At age seven, Arlo ate a clock out of spite and began hearing the thoughts of insects. By ten, he could recite the dreams of abandoned satellites. By twelve, the metal had reached his skull, and the dreams began bleeding through.
He remembered none of this.
Instead, Arlo stood still in the memory chamber while a sacred claw, known as the Archivist, performed its delicate extraction:
Not of memory, but of possibility.
Each drop of red: a future he would never live. Each glowing eye: a future that tried to escape and failed. The tendrils in his neck were thought conduits, rerouted to prevent compassion. They hummed in Morse when he slept.
What did he dream of?
An orchard with no trees. A language spoken only by mirrors. A scream that echoed before it began.
The painting is a caution—
A record of the moment just before the last human emotion was removed.
We called it “self-preservation.”
Arlo called it Tuesday.
