“The Gears That Fell in Love with the Wrong Century”
In the orange epoch—after the oceans turned to parquet flooring and before the trees voted to float—two wandering mechanisms named Vurm and Fizzik met beneath the Hanging Groans of Klember Tor.
Vurm had a blue eye that rotated dreams. Fizzik had a yellow one that only saw the endings of stories. They were not designed to meet. One came from the era of perpetual forward, the other from a past that hadn’t happened yet.
But the air was buzzing with nostalgia for events that might still occur, and the vines were humming recipes in forgotten dialects. Something clicked.
They fused—not out of necessity, but rhythm.
Every seventeen hours they danced, limbs spinning backward, clockwise, and orthogonally. Their steps cracked the ground and whispered new alphabets into the dust. No one knew why, but everyone who watched forgot the names of their regrets.
Eventually, they rusted together—still turning, still whispering. When questioned, they said only:
“We were born between instructions.”
Some say they are praying. Others say they are broken.
The truth: they are kissing in a language time never learned.
