“The God That Watches Backwards”
Once, on the 9th Tuesday after the unbirth of logic, a Watcher burrowed up through the membrane of Now and grew itself a cathedral of rust and indecision. Its eyes, twin furnaces of compressed dusk, saw nothing in the present—only echoes of futures that hadn’t failed yet. It did not blink. It could not. Every time it tried, a village in the Fourth Fold turned into bees.
The Watcher’s tongue was a bell tower. It rang itself only when someone told the truth. No one ever heard it.
Locals—brittle people made of apology and spores—called it Mr. Then. They left gifts in the jagged roots of its spined neck: broken compasses, melting keys, tiny portraits of people who never existed. In return, Mr. Then would sometimes grant you a backwards hour—sixty minutes you could spend undoing a memory. The only rule: you had to live with what came instead.
One pilgrim once asked, “What are you guarding?”
Mr. Then turned slowly, laboriously, grinding entire seasons into powder, and said:
“I am not a guardian. I am the forgotten hunger of inevitability.”
And then it laughed.
And then it wept.
And then the mountains behind it caught fire in the shape of a question mark.
