It twisted upward through silence, bifurcating only when someone somewhere failed to articulate what they meant. Every fork in its form was born of stammered love, abandoned metaphors, or the word “almost” said with trembling sincerity.

One day, a wandering mechanic-philosopher named Ruun arrived carrying a satchel full of obsolete punctuation and dream-keys. Ruun had come to repair the world’s grammar, but first, the branch had to be deciphered.

He began by attaching devices to the branch’s protrusions:

A cerulean signal anchor calibrated to measure forgotten intentions.

A red-mouthed orbiter that mapped emotional residue in orbital spirals.

A vertical sigil-bar, etched with glyphs that only revealed themselves when unobserved.

The branch responded by growing an arm that looped back on itself—a gesture of either confusion or invitation. Ruun, not knowing which, fed it a strand of thought coded in the syntax of birdsong. The branch vibrated. Three new forms appeared overnight: a weightless vial, a green bead spine, and something that resembled a sideways question mark.

The machine was not complete. It never would be. That was the point. It was not meant to finish anything, but to remind all who saw it that translation is an eternal mistake with perfect rhythm.

Ruun eventually left, becoming a verb in a dialect no longer spoken. The branch remained. It still grows whenever someone forgets a word mid-sentence.

This painting is its portrait, captured just before it looped back into itself and became metaphor entirely. Hang it near your quietest thought. It listens, but only between your sighs.

Natural mechanization.
